The Sofia Strep A Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA) uses advanced immunofluorescence-based lateral-flow technology to detect Group A Streptococcal antigens from throat swabs of symptomatic patients. The Sofia Strep A FIA involves the extraction of the antigenic components of the Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria.Quidel has manufactured the QuickVue line of products for hospital and physician office labs for over 30 years. QuickVue rapid lateral flow tests produce accurate results in minutes, allowing for faster diagnosis and treatment.
To perform the rapid strep test, the patient’s swab specimen is placed in the Reagent Tube containing the Reagent Solution, during which time the bacterial antigens are extracted, making them more accessible to the specific antibodies. An aliquot of the extracted specimen is dispensed into the Cassette sample well. From the sample well, the specimen migrates through a test strip containing various unique chemical environments. If Group A Streptococcal antigens are present, they will be bound by antibodies coupled to fluorescent microparticles that migrate through the test strip. The fluorescent microparticles containing bound antigen will be captured by antibodies at a defined location on the strep a test strip where they are detected by Sofia. If antigens are not present, the fluorescent microparticles will not be trapped by the capture antibodies nor detected by SofiaThe QuickVue Influenza A+B Test detects and differentiates influenza type A and type B antigens directly from nasal swab, nasopharyngeal swab, nasal wash and/or nasal aspirate specimens. A single sample can be used to run both the QuickVue Influenza A+B Test and QuickVue RSV 10 Test.
Sofia will scan the test strip and measure the immunofluorescent signal by processing the results using method-specific algorithms and display the test results (Positive, Negative, or Invalid) on its display screen. The test results can also be automatically printed on an integrated printer if this option is selected.
